Project brief

Location: Chelsfield, Orpington

This family’s living room had gone untouched for 8 years and lacked the welcoming feel they wanted. The clients wished to revamp the space to make it more inviting, practical, and aesthetically pleasing, while also accommodating their family of six and being suitable for entertaining guests.

Goals: Design the living room to create a welcoming, enjoyable, and stylish space. Ensure the room is practical with accessible tables. Make it feel spacious and airy (but not clinical). Accommodate a family of six and provide the ideal space for entertaining friends. Incorporate non-matching but complementary furniture pieces, brighten up the room, and maintain a dog-friendly environment. Create a cohesive room while addressing the awkward positioning of the TV and fireplace, which made both ends of the room redundant.

Practical requirements: Enhance the seating arrangement to comfortably fit six people, making it easy to spend quality time together. Add more surface spaces for convenience. Work with existing artwork, the fireplace, TV, and curtains to create a cohesive design that maximizes the room’s potential. Ensure the space has ample lighting to set the mood in the evenings.

Design: We transformed this living room into a versatile space used throughout the day and evening. The primary seating arrangement now comfortably accommodates six people, with practical surface spaces and a layout that invites quality family time, centered around the TV and fireplace. To take advantage of the room’s generous size, we created three additional seating areas for relaxation, offering views of the garden. We introduced a mix of wallpaper and paint to add texture and interest, and installed multiple controllable lighting options to set the evening mood. By working with the existing curtains and artwork, we achieved a cohesive and light look that brings fresh energy to the room. Now, this living room is a comfortable, relaxing, and inviting space the clients are proud of.
